Music examinations are not a compulsory part of learning an instrument or learning to sing, but they can provide valuable structure, motivation and a clear sense of progression for students. Exam boards such as the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM), Trinity College London and Rockschool London offer well-established assessment pathways, typically ranging from Grades 1 to 8, which are widely recognised as international benchmarks of musical achievement. Preparing for these exams helps to develop technical skills, performance confidence, discipline and goal-setting, while also providing opportunities for formal recognition of progress. In addition, for many learners, these qualifications can support applications for further study. It is important to note that support is often available through teachers and exam boards to help ensure that assessments are accessible to all students. Teachers will usually recommend exam entry only when a student is ready, ensuring the experience is positive and appropriately challenging.
